Renault 4 E-Tech Electric review, a modern electric crossover inspired by a classic

Bringing an automotive icon back to life is never easy, yet Renault has managed the challenge with remarkable confidence. Following the success of the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, the French manufacturer has reintroduced another legendary nameplate with the Renault 4 E-Tech Electric, ahead of the upcoming electric Twingo. Rather than relying solely on nostalgia, Renault has paired its heritage with a fully electric platform, giving two historic models a new role in Europe’s zero-emission future.

Although Renault’s sales in Italy rose by 3.9% during the first half of the year, reaching 51,248 passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, the Renault 5 and Renault 4 are only now becoming a familiar sight on European roads.

Renault 4 E-Tech Electric test drive

We spent a week behind the wheel of the Renault 4 E-Tech Electric, driving through the busy streets of Rome and on longer trips outside the city to evaluate whether this B-segment crossover lives up to its iconic predecessor.

Measuring 4.14 metres in length, 1.81 metres in width and 1.55 metres in height, the Renault 4 is 22 cm longer than the Renault 5. It retains compact dimensions that make it ideal for urban driving while offering enough interior space to comfortably accommodate a small family.

Renault 4 E-Tech Electric design connects past and present

The exterior faithfully recalls the character of the original Renault 4. An 18 cm ground clearance provides greater versatility on uneven roads, while the unmistakable side profile, circular front lights and vertical rear lamps reinterpret the classic design in a contemporary way.

Inside, the cabin feels spacious and thoughtfully designed. Denim-effect upholstery, already seen on the Renault 5, adds personality, while the mix of materials and colours gives the interior a premium feel. Plastic surfaces are well finished, and practicality is another highlight thanks to the 420-litre luggage compartment with its low loading sill.

The infotainment system combines dual digital displays with Reno, Renault’s digital assistant, while Google Automotive powers the operating system, delivering a responsive and intuitive user experience.

How the Renault 4 E-Tech Electric performs on the road

One of the Renault 4’s strongest qualities is its manoeuvrability. The tight turning circle makes city driving effortless, while the electric motor delivers lively acceleration.

Two powertrains are available:

  • 120 hp with a 40 kWh battery, offering a WLTP driving range of 308 km.
  • 150 hp with a 52 kWh battery, the version we tested, providing a WLTP range of 408 km.

Every version comes equipped with an 11 kW AC onboard charger and a heat pump as standard to improve efficiency during colder months.

Renault 4 E-Tech Electric offers comfortable everyday driving

The suspension strikes a reassuring balance between comfort and stability. Body roll becomes noticeable only during faster cornering, while the steering remains direct and accurate, making both urban and suburban driving particularly relaxing.

The seats are comfortable for both front and rear passengers, and the digital interface is refreshingly straightforward, avoiding the unnecessary complexity often found in some rival electric vehicles.

Regenerative braking is adjusted through steering-wheel paddles with four selectable levels, including One Pedal driving, making everyday driving more efficient and intuitive.

Drivers may need a short period to become familiar with the various steering-column controls, including the gear selector and Renault’s traditional audio control stalk. The only significant weakness is the reversing camera, whose image quality falls below expectations for a modern electric crossover.

Renault 4 E-Tech Electric prices and trim levels

The Renault 4 range starts at €29,900 for the Evolution version, powered by the 120 hp motor and 40 kWh battery.

Even the entry-level model includes a comprehensive equipment package featuring:

  • Full LED headlights
  • Latest-generation ADAS
  • Automatic climate control
  • Heat pump

The range is topped by the Renault 4 Iconic, equipped with the 150 hp motor, 52 kWh battery, and priced from €36,900.
